The W.C.

Post by Montag » Mon Nov 21, 2022 11:01 pm

So, who actually invented the water closet? Thomas Crapper produced them but apparently didn't, despite the common misconception, invent it.

I have to say I admire the way we are all ignoring the other WC on here. Is it really as boring and meaningless as it seems to me? Another lifeless carcass of what was once, the greatest sport ever.

I watched it in my local spoons which is a 5 minute walk from my home. My phone has a bigger screen than the one in the pub but it was still a jolly good match to watch. There were only around 5 fans in there.

It's certainly a hard tournament to get excited about, given the corruption and human rights issues surrounding the host nation, and the disruption to the domestic season caused by its re-scheduling. While the whole thing feels wrong on a number of levels, it was still exciting to watch England play as they did yesterday.

It's disappointing that players aren't prepared to stand behind even the token gesture of an armband if it means risking a booking, but it's not a huge surprise. Watching the Iranian team refuse to sing their national anthem and their own fans booing it felt like a pretty powerful message being sent out, so there are silver linings.

Classic case of "we've got this won" and then when it goes wrong players just unable to lift their game enough to get back on top again - and don't forget Saudi Arabia did a good job to keep playing which shouldn't be forgotten and makes that group interesting!
This time we'll get it right - just believe!

On the plus side, the club will have made about £350k from Chair and Dieng's presence at the WC, despite the fact that neither has played a minute. Every cloud, eh ?

Shame Chair's staying longer, but what a result for Morocco.

This might be a blessing ... it will give an opportunity to others, and we can see if we can play well without him.
