and yes I knopw its all over the place like bind weed but Sharps Doom Bar, it may be frowned upon by the CAMRA elite but I prefer my Malt to my hops and doom bar is not bad.

At the moment I am enjoying Loddon Breweries' Ferryman's Gold.

Most of what Brakspears produces is nice too.

There's a nice new micro concern in Twyford, name escapes me - I'm trying to organise a tour (they recommend getting the train from Reading so the designated driver doesn't feel left out, which I think is a nice touch and good customer service, not to say empathy).

I reckon the first thing you need to do is to find a decent pub with a good selection of beers, PROPER beers not just a selection of too-cold lagers.
Then, just work your way through.....
It's a great journey, one that never ends

Indeed find a good pub first and take it from there, if you like to mix football with your alcohol theres a great pub called the defectors weld on shepherds bush green which not only has a fair few real ale's but also a fine selection of the worlds best lagers on tap. Or if its ale you want the Bree Louise in Euston is like a mini CAMRA beer festival in its self.

actually I am not too keen on Lagers, preferring Bitters...
I remember once entering the only pub in a small Scottish village along the northern coast and not knowing what to order I asked for their best...indeed I got a great beer...I remember the name was "Spitfire"..never heard before...
I allow that I am very ignorant on this subject, being more "prepared" and skilled about wines...
