Why Greece are through and Russia are out?

Both plated 3: Won 1 drew 1 & Lost 1 = 4 points

However while Greece have a goal difference of 0 Russia have a +2 goal difference. In addition in their 3 games Greece scored 3 goals while Russia scored 5.

Anyway you look at it Russia did better than Greece.

So why are Russia going home, and Greece looking forward to a quarter final V Germany?

If it's because of the result between the two - then surely that comes further down the pecking order than goal difference and goals scored.
