I could understand the strong, defensive mentality for the group stages. Whilst it won't win any neutrals over it did get us through as it was supposed to do.
However, when you get to the sharp end, I don't think you can show that lack of ambition and expect to get any further.
Milner is solid, but we needed more threat from the start, Young has been abysmal for all 4 games and should have been replaced by Oxlade Chamberlain, Rooney was woeful and should never have walked back into the team - once again players being picked on reputation rather than form, and worryingly last night the midfield and strikers looked knackered after 20 minutes.
I try not to care, but I still do. Can't really see how this team can progress, there's not exactly a new generation hammering at the door.
As someone else has said too, the defence were good last night, they had to be. I thought Johnson did very well, and grudgingly will concede Terry was very good.
Still, most people I was with agreed that it was the correct result and would have been a travesty if we'd have gone through.
Bring on the new season! _________________ Far better is it to dare mighty things, than to dwell in the twighlight that knows neither victory nor defeat - T Roosevelt |

The national team suffers with all of the foreign players playing in the Premier League. This situation will not improve and we haven't got that many youngsters coming through who could make a difference. |
True but something of a vicious circle here - we don't coach young players from an early stage to have anything approaching the technical and tactical skills of Spain, Italy, Germany and and and. Given the superiority of many overseas players, it's hardly surprising we see so many being imported into our top Club teams, to the exclusion of home grown 'talent'. Plus ca change I'm afraid _________________

| As has been mentioned above, thank God we have gone out now and can avoid utter humiliation at the hands of Germany. Shearer kept going on last night about how we're the "5th, 6th, 7th best team in the world and that's what we need to accept". Dream on!! We're not even the 7th best team in Europe let alone the world, and let's face it - any country that harps on about Wayne Rooney being a world class player is severely deluded. |

Capello pulled off the same trick as well, might be that they are not good enough.
Ashley Cole the only genuine world class player we have, shame he missed the penalty |

I would argue Joe Hart too. Attitude and ability both excellent, he'll be there for years to come. _________________ Far better is it to dare mighty things, than to dwell in the twighlight that knows neither victory nor defeat - T Roosevelt |
