|
|
Hello all,
I've just been caught doing (according to the speed gun on the tripod) 35mph in a 30mph zone.
I always thought you always received a 10% + 2mph cushion, so that extra 1mph makes a massive difference (I think).
I've been driving for over 4 years, never received so much as a warning, but I've been told I will have my fine coming through the letterbox shortly. I feel really hard done by judging by the location and road I was caught on, literally 10 yards on and it turns into a 40mph zone!
Any loopholes or way to avoid this?
Doesn't matter how pedantic I need to get over it, could really do with the money at the moment _________________ Isle Of Wight R'ssssssssss |

You could see if they'll let you do a speed awareness course?
It'll cost more than the likely fine and take a day of your life but you'll get no points.
Otherwise it's just gonna be a lesson learnt (and that's not necessarily not to speed but to take care in accident black spots or any area you don't know).
And FYI, you usually just get 10% (but some forces are tougher). Also rcar's speedo is probably a bit fast anyway (satnav speeds are usually accurate). |

I think Dave's suggestion is sound because points will increase your insurance premiums. I'm coming up for 50 and it put £50 on my insurance, a bit more to keep me on my wife's and I had to take myself off my son's policy although to be fair, I was doing a bit more than 5mph over the limit.
The 10%+2 is the low point at which they will do you not the high point where you won't get done if that makes sense. |

I usually just write in and give some bs explanation about how someone in front of me was driving dangerously slow and I was trying to avoid a hazard by going around him.
It's usually more elaborate then that but I've got out of a few. They probably just let me off because I've taken the time to write in.
Got out of a parking ticket, bus lane ticket, speeding ticket by writing in. Of course it's a rather unorthodox approach.
I figure if it works, great, if it doesn't, I'm in the same position as I was originally. |

You will probably be offered a Speed Awareness Course.
If you are within 10 mph of the limit they tend to offer this.
I had one, they last 4 hours round my way and invlove 2 hours classroom and 2 hours driving. You will pay your normal fine £60 plus a further £80 ish depending on area. You will then not get the three points.
I can make this thread QPR related, as at my speed awareness course I sat next to Marc Bircham for the whole classroom theory session!!!
He had to rush off to a youth match straight after!! |

Agree. If you got caught on the island and the IOW comes under Hampshire constabulary (which I think it does) then you should get the choice of a fixed penalty or a speed awareness course.
I got caught in Fleet in Hampshire doing 35 in a 30 zone a couple of years ago and elected to do the speed awareness course rather than the fixed penalty and points.
It was at the time about 15 quid more than the FP and just involved 2-3 hours in a classroom but as Steve A says it is worth paying the extra to avoid the more costly insurance. _________________ Alan McDonald 1963-2012

As you do a lot of driving in unfamiliar areas due your away support of the Rs I would suggest a speed camera scanner.
some come with satnav that dell you when fixed cameras are coming up and you knock your speed accordingly. Others, the more expensive ones work on the frequencies omitted and tell when non-static ones are coming up too, a mate of mine had the latter but it also also got confused with automated supermarket doors!!
Both are legal as they speed cameras are put in dangerous areas and anything that warns you of those dangers is allowed. They're not there to get money out of people you know!!
Ask on your course and a quick argos and internet search will get you the info.
Anyone else used these systems? |

Sheep - I heard someone talking about these on the radio yesterday and they sound like a good idea.
SM - If you get offered a speed awareness course then I would take it if you can put up with being preached to about speed for a few hours. Will save having to see your insurance put up.
Otherwise it is a matter of just taking it on the chin I suppose... _________________ QPR & Ireland |

Thanks for all the advice.
Do you still have to declare to your insurance company whether you've done a speed awareness course? Does it still increase the premiums?
Thanks again. _________________ Isle Of Wight R'ssssssssss |

Failure to disclose could result in your policy being invalid if you put a claim in, so tell them no matter what and that you've been on the course. Better to have a policy in place than not, and put it all down to a minor life experience and forget about it.
When I had mine they merely noted it and they assume that everyone can get caught out. If you had 3 speeding notices in a year it might be different though.
If you want cheap insurance you can now get your car rigged up to a data collection devise that insurers can tap into to see how you drive. It takes data on how fast you go, how quick you accelerate and decelerate etc.
TomTom Start 20 UK and ROI 4.3in Sat Nav - Speed limit indicator
TomTom Start 20 UK, ROI and Western Europe 4.3in Sat Nav - Safety camera alerts - subscription required £19.99 for 12 months.
Garmin Nuvi 1390LMT UK, ROI and Europe 4.3in Sat Nav - Safety camera alerts - fixed, average, variable, temporary, mobile and red light. 30 day free trial followed by Onetime update for £4.99 or 1 year subscription £19.99.
Pay how you drive
Here, GPS or tracking devices monitor how you drive. Of course, even then, the price still depends on your personal risk profile.
Co-operative. The Co-operative young driver* insurance fits a 'smartbox' into 17-25-year-olds' cars to monitor acceleration, braking, cornering and time of driving. It then charges you for insurance every 90 days.
The price of the insurance goes down by around 10% or up by around 15% depending on how well the car’s been driven – and severe driving could see your insurance cancelled.
Co-op says it will produce savings for young drivers who drive well, with 51% of under 25s saving up to £556 (see the MSE news story Young Drivers Insurance for more info). It's still relatively new, so as yet we can’t validate this.
AA. The AA have recently launched the 'Drivesafe' pay how you drive policy. By using GPS technology, it considers four factors: Speed, Anticipate Traffic, Follow the Landscape and Where and When.
Based on these factors, and a few more, your premium could adjust accordingly though you are able to log in to your 'Driving Dashboard' to check the Drivesafe score and reports.
In addition to this, the 'Drivesafe' box also doubles up as a theft tracking device.
