No, nothing to do with a potential new signing of the same name as the Bard himself, but all to do with the scourge of most schoolboys learning English, and I was no different as a kid, in my instance sitting at the back of the class on a Thursday morning reading the latest NME than Henry V. But tonight I went to the Globe on the south bank to watch my first Shakespeare play (well voluntarily anyway), The Taming of the Shrew being the literary masterpiece in question and I will say that anybody who has never been to the Globe, go, it is a supreme experience, with a mixture of seating stacked on three semi-circular tiers and standing (for a fiver) in the courtyard in front of the stage. I have had a most magnificent evening and the play was a real delight, if you didn't know it is a comedy, and at times I was crying with laughter.
Shakespeare happened to have two things in common with me, firstly he shared the same birthday and secondly and not a lot of people realise this, he was also a QPR supporter and was to be the first to realise the signing of our new keeper by writing a play about him, Julius Ceasar, he just happened to get the spelling wrong! |

Well done DW. I used to feel the same about WS. I remember being bored silly in the 70's when my old history teacher hired Oliviers Richard III for us all to watch. That all changed in the 80's when I saw the RSC's Plantagenets at the Barbican with my wife and daughter. I hadn't realised how important WS was to our English identity. Have never visited the Globe but intend to soon. All credit to Sam Wanamaker for making it possible. _________________ Serfs ye were and serfs ye shall remain.....until Doomsday.......Richard II, 1381) |

Or if you'd rather just listen to tunes with a bit of a story there's always the Holland Park Opera (which is, after all, almost "local").
FYI Animals (guide dogs excepted) are not allowed which does seem slightly odd and even a bit unfair |
