Should something as important as this be left to the whimsy of an online petition? Surely this is better left in the hands of the politicians who can make fully informed decisions?

Yeah because our politicians can be trusted cant they!?

This same group created a petition to pressure Jeremy Hunt into not allowing Murdoch go through with the Sky deal and guess what? It worked.

If this isn't people power and true democracy in action I don't know what is.

Yes our politicians are paid to make these decisions but public opinion is important and for far too long our government has been silent when it comes to Palestinian rights and always falling on the side of Israel.

This petition already has nearly 350,000 signatures which is amazing and is something that cannot be ignored.

The UN are meeting tomorrow to discuss the matter of Palestinian statehood and our government are currently one of the few that have not recognised Palestine, this petition could increase the pressure on our government making the right decision.

A vote is expected in September , this will be very interesting to watch because Israel and its Veto buddy the USA will not want to give up any of the stolen land they currently occupy and what do Israel and the US do when things don't go their way? They go to war.

Thought I would bump this one up as we are now a matter of days away from the UN decision and this Avaaz petition now has over 900,000 people who have signed it which is well beyond the original targets set.

Pressure is increasing on the US to make the right decision , in Egypt and now in Jordan there have been large protests against both Israel and the US and that could snowball if the US decides to use its veto and support Israel like it always has done historically.

The US has just issued a warning to any of its citizens to leave Syria immediately which is a further sign that things in the region are starting to deteriorate further.

The Israelis are 100% opposed to this move and today the Foreign Minister of Israel Avigdor Leiberman starting applying pressure and even issuing threats.

http://www.smh.com.au/world/threats-fly-as-palestinians-dig-in-over-statehood-20110915-1kbyr.html

I do not expect the US to change its mind on this , but I think the pressure on them will increase massively in the coming months and things have to change in favour of the Palestinians simply because the majority of the world are supporting them.

The clock is ticking, lets hope our government can be on the right side of history.

Will you ?

Obama the individual has absolutely no say on this issue , so to expect any change in the US position on Israel would be foolish.

The US is run by the Israeli lobby, they own congress.

The thing is change is taking place in the Middle east whether Israel or the US like it or not , they can either be on the right side of history or be isolated like they are now and bare the brunt of that stubborn hypocritical position.

The facts are the majority of the world supports the recognition of a Palestinian state , the US cannot lecture on the merits of freedom but choose to ignore the plight of the Palestinians while supporting dictatorships across the region.

The little credibility the US and Obama had on the world stage has now been well and truly lost all for a racist, apartheid nation that openly carries out ethnic cleansing.

In 20 years the so called peace process has achieved nothing other than to give time for Israel to slowly eat away at the West Bank. This move for recognition at the UN has made Isael nervous as it has the potential to change the game. But Israel are past masters of obfuscation. Together with their allies they are already making sure it will drag on for years.

It does seem incredible that on the one hand, America is applauding efforts by many in the Arab world to establish democratic nation states and yet, when one group of clearly identified peoples wish to apply through the correct process for nationhood status and on a landmass they appear to have lived happily on prior to 1948, the US uses its veto.

And as you say, whilst Israel insidiously builds settlements against agreements on the matter.

I winder what Lord Wilberforce would make of it all!
